Inside Nabbanja – King charles Meet
Uganda’s Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, has met His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom during the launch of the Commonwealth Nature Initiative in Antigua and Barbuda.
The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), which has brought together government leaders and business executives from across the Commonwealth.
King Charles III held engagements with several heads of government and business leaders inside an onshore pavilion. The discussions focused on regional issues and areas of mutual interest.
During a closed-door meeting, Nabbanja briefed the British monarch on Uganda’s development priorities. She highlighted the need for international support towards key national infrastructure projects.
Nabbanja Pushes for Standard Gauge Railway Funding
Among the key issues raised was the financing of Uganda’s Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project.
The Prime Minister emphasised the importance of the railway in supporting Uganda’s development agenda. She also invited King Charles III to visit Uganda.
The proposed railway is expected to strengthen transport infrastructure and improve regional connectivity.
Uganda Reaffirms Commitment to Environmental Protection
Addressing the Commonwealth Nature Initiative, Nabbanja reaffirmed Uganda’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
She appealed to the Commonwealth Secretariat to support nature-related initiatives across member states.
Nabbanja noted that more than 70 per cent of Ugandans depend on nature for their livelihoods. She therefore emphasised the importance of investing in environmental protection.
Australia’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, and other government leaders also expressed their commitment to supporting the initiative.
Nabbanja Addresses Commonwealth Business Forum
Later in the day, the Ugandan Prime Minister addressed the Commonwealth Business Forum at the Antigua Cricket Arena.
The forum, which was closed to the press, brought together business leaders and other stakeholders to discuss investment opportunities and partnerships.
The 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting is taking place from November 2 to 4 in Antigua and Barbuda.
Held under the theme “Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” the meeting seeks to strengthen cooperation among member states amid growing global political and economic uncertainties.
The Commonwealth comprises 56 member countries across Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and the Pacific. Most were formerly part of the British Empire.
Leaders from the member states are attending the summit alongside representatives from Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Brazil and the United Arab Emirates.
