Retired Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu was reportedly ordered to confess to alleged subversive activities as part of efforts to secure his freedom following his arrest in Soroti City.

Elwelu, a former Deputy Chief of Defence Forces and Commander of the UPDF Land Forces, was arrested by security forces over alleged involvement in activities aimed at destabilising the Teso sub-region.

According to claims surrounding his arrest, the retired general was asked to confess to the alleged subversive activities as a condition for being forgiven and regaining his freedom.

However, the circumstances surrounding the reported demand remain unclear. The UPDF has not publicly confirmed the alleged arrangement.

UPDF Confirms Elwelu’s Arrest

In a statement issued on Monday evening, UPDF Acting Spokesperson Col Chris Magezi announced Elwelu’s arrest in Soroti City.

“Renegade UPDF Officer Peter Elwelu has this evening been arrested by security forces in Soroti City. He has been on the run over involvement in subversive activities and plans to destabilize Teso,” Magezi said.

Claims of Recovered Guns

Magezi further alleged that security forces had recently recovered 15 guns linked to Elwelu.

The items reportedly included military fatigues and two pickup trucks.

“The security forces recently recovered 15 guns in his possession, military fatigues, and two pickup trucks,” he stated.

The army spokesperson said Elwelu would face prosecution over the allegations.

“He will be charged and prosecuted in the courts of law accordingly,” Magezi added.

Reportedly Held at Makindye

Unconfirmed reports indicate that Elwelu is being held at Makindye, Kampala, following his arrest.

However, authorities have not officially confirmed his current detention location or provided details about when he will appear in court.

Elwelu retired from active military service with the rank of Lieutenant General after serving in some of the country’s most senior military positions.
