Kampala Mayor Salim Uhuru has applauded businessman Dr Sudhir Ruparelia for his longstanding contribution to the Indian community in Uganda and efforts to promote cultural unity and social cohesion.

Speaking at the 2026 Diwali Food Festival at Speke Resort Munyonyo on Sunday, November 1, Uhuru recognised Ruparelia’s involvement in initiatives that bring communities together and strengthen relationships between Ugandans and people of Indian origin.

Promoting Community Unity

The mayor commended Ruparelia for supporting activities that unite the Indian community while creating opportunities for interaction with the wider Ugandan population.

He noted that successful entrepreneurs should extend their contributions beyond business by supporting community initiatives and cultural activities.

Uhuru particularly recognised Ruparelia’s continued support for annual Diwali celebrations, which bring together business leaders, Indian nationals and Ugandans.

Indian Community’s Contribution

Uhuru also acknowledged the Indian community’s longstanding contribution to Uganda’s economic and social development.

People of Indian origin have established businesses across manufacturing, trade, hospitality, healthcare, education and real estate.

Their investments have supported employment, expanded business opportunities and strengthened the private sector.

Through the Ruparelia Group, Dr Ruparelia maintains investments across several sectors, while Speke Resort Munyonyo hosts major cultural, diplomatic and business gatherings.

Diwali Celebrates Cultural Exchange

Organised by the Indian Association of Uganda under Chairman Paresh Mehta, the 2026 festival attracted thousands of guests.

The celebration featured Indian cuisine, music, culture and traditions.

Diwali, popularly known as the Festival of Lights, symbolises the triumph of light over darkness.

Beyond its cultural significance, the festival provides a platform for friendship, business networking and stronger Uganda-India relations.

Uhuru’s remarks highlighted the contribution of private sector leaders in preserving cultural traditions and fostering peaceful coexistence among Uganda’s diverse communities.
